Busiest ever month at London Stansted as airport passes 25 million passengers a year

Summary

Record breaking month sees over 2.58 million passengers at Stansted in July.

Busiest ever day on 31 July as over 91,000 pass through terminal.

Annual passengers over 25 million for first time in airport’s history.

£50 million projects set to improve experience and provide more capacity.

London Stansted experienced its busiest ever month as over 2.58 million passengers passed through the airport during July, up 10.5% over the same month last year and beating the previous high set in July 2007.

The month also saw the airport record its busiest ever day as 91,493 passengers passed through the terminal on 31st July.

In the 12 months ending July 2017, Stansted’s passenger numbers grew by 6.6% over the previous year with the moving annual total now standing at over 25 million, passing the milestone figure for the first time in the airport’s history.

Cargo volumes once again increased with over 21,200 tonnes of goods passing through the airport in July, up 2.1% over the same month in 2016. The 12 month annual total grew by 4.5% over the previous year and now stands at over 259,100 tonnes for the period.

To keep pace with increasing demand, a significant investment programme is in place to improve the passenger experience and provide more capacity. The centrepiece of this plan is the new £130 million arrivals building which was granted planning permission in April this year and will help transform facilities to give passengers the best possible experience. Once complete, Stansted will be the only UK airport operating dedicated arrivals and departures terminals.

In addition, work has begun on a number of projects totalling £50 million to provide additional check-in capacity and add more seating in the departure lounge as well as increasing the number of aircraft parking stands on the airfield. This work will help improve customer service and add vital capacity during the period in advance of the new arrivals building becoming operational and the subsequent full transformation of the existing terminal.

The growth in passenger traffic at London Stansted continues to demonstrate the vital role the airport plays in providing more destinations across Europe and beyond that not only gives passengers fantastic choice to fly from their local airport but it also highlights our importance as a major gateway to London and the east of England for those visiting the UK this summer.

As these results clearly show, the airport has never been busier, so to help us keep pace with increased demand and improve the passenger experience, we have started a significant investment programme to deliver a wide range of projects over the next five years to transform the airport and support sustainable growth on our single runway.
