Summer getaway sends passenger numbers soaring to record highs at London Stansted

Summary
  • 2.7 million passengers in August sets new monthly record
  • Busiest ever day sees nearly 95,000 pass through terminal
  • More than 7.6 million passengers during peak summer months

London Stansted welcomed over 2.7 million passengers in August as the airport recorded its busiest ever summer season with a total of 7.6 million passengers passing through the terminal during the peak months of June-August.

August was also the busiest single month on record at Stansted, beating the previous all-time high set just last month, and up 9.9% over the same month last year.

During the month Stansted broke the record for its busiest single day for the second month running as 94,785 passengers passed through the terminal on 14 August. The top ten busiest ever days at Stansted are now all recorded in July and August this year.

The rolling 12 month total to August 2017 now stands at 25.4 million passengers, an increase of 6.4% over the previous year.

To keep pace with demand and enhance the overall airport experience, Stansted has committed to a significant investment programme to improve customer facilities, including adding more check-in desks, more seating in the departure lounge and additional car parking spaces. This is in advance of the construction of a new £130 million dedicated arrivals building.

Cargo volumes continue to rise with more than 21,500 tonnes of goods passing through the airport in August, up 1.4% over the same month last year. The annual total increased by 4.0% over the previous 12 months to over 259,400 tonnes for the period.

The main summer holiday period saw London Stansted welcome more passengers than at any other time in the airport’s history as over 7.6 million people took to the skies to take advantage of the 190 destinations on offer across our extensive route network.

The summer schedule was boosted by new flights and holidays from jet2.com plus more passengers than ever flying with Ryanair. Long-haul flights to destinations such as Orlando and Cancun also proved popular.

This record breaking growth highlights more passengers than ever are choosing Stansted as their gateway to and from the eastern region and London, and we are working hard to add even more choice and new routes.
