London Stansted celebrates rising stars in Apprenticeship Week

London Stansted Airport is celebrating the work of its own apprentices while highlighting the value they can bring to other airport-based businesses throughout National Apprenticeship Week.

London Stansted currently trains and employs 25 apprentices in roles including Engineering, Customer Services, Property Maintenance and Vehicle Maintenance, and with the new Stansted Airport College set to open on site by September, the number of Apprentices supported by Stansted will continue to grow.

An open drop-in session has been held today at the airport to provide details about available apprenticeship options at the college, and to share with on-site business partners the opportunities and value that apprentices can bring.

On Thursday morning, current Apprentices working at Stansted will come together at a celebratory brunch for networking, hosted by Manchester Airports Group Apprenticeships Manager, Katy Hennessy.

And in the afternoon, they will head to the airport’s education centre, the Aerozone, to volunteer their time with a group of Harlow schoolchildren learning all about aviation and career opportunities available at the airport.

Ellie Miller, from Little Dunmow, is a Creative and Digital Media Apprentice based in Stansted Airport’s social media team. She said:

Ellie Miller, Creative and Digital Media Apprentice
An apprenticeship was the perfect fit for me as I was unsure what career path to venture down. Enrolling in an apprenticeship scheme has given me the room to work in an industry I’ve always been interested in, as well as the opportunity to be guided by professionals. I have truly loved every minute of the past four months and I couldn’t recommend it enough. And the discount in World Duty Free is a real perk!

Ben Clarke from Chelmsford, has been a Customer Service Apprentice for four months. He said:

Ben Clarke, Customer Service Apprentice
It was the role itself that attracted me to Stansted Airport, and the chance to study for something is a benefit. No day in the role is the same in terms of what you’ll be doing which keeps you on your toes, it’s a challenge and I would recommend it to anyone.

Apprentices form an integral part of our workforce at Stansted Airport and I’m delighted we are celebrating their hard work this week. Apprenticeships combine practical on the job training along with working towards a nationally recognised qualification. Here at MAG we have a history of successful apprentices that have joined the organisation to become valuable members of the team. Recruiting apprentices has allowed us to bring great new talent into our organisation, whilst providing them with the opportunity to combine both education and paid work.
