Airport volunteers fly in to spruce up Saffron Walden’s Fairycroft Centre

Staff from London Stansted’s security compliance team swapped high-viz jackets for paint and brushes as they volunteered for a day of decorating at Fairycroft Arts and Media Centre in Saffron Walden.

Rising to the team challenge organised by Volunteer Uttlesford, the team spruced up the foyer and main hall at the centre which puts on activities for young people and hosts free music and arts events for the community.

The Fairycroft Centre got in touch with Volunteer Uttlesford (VU) asking us to find a group of willing volunteers to help them out with the project. We immediately approached Stansted who have a big community volunteering programme at the airport, and they offered up a team of budding DIYers to take on the challenge. The team did a great job decorating the foyer and main hall and we and the centre are absolutely delighted with how it looks.

The volunteers were managed on the day by Ayhan Reeves, the airport’s Security Compliance Manager.

Apart from a brilliant team bonding opportunity and being able to spend time with colleagues away from the office, it was great to get out and about, representing the airport, and give something back to such a worthwhile community project.

Staff volunteering is one of the airport’s top community initiatives and it is always keen to hear from organisations, charities and schools who might need a bit of help with a project. Details should be sent to stn_communityrelations@stanstedairport.com for the team to assess what help can be offered, depending on project and operational availability of staff.

Volunteer Uttlesford was established in 1995 to support the community of Uttlesford, which is the largest geographical district in Essex and the most rural. They connect and provide advice to locals wishing to volunteer and provide support to organisations that provide volunteer opportunities. To find out more visit https://volunteeruttlesford.org.uk/
