Local students gain confidence and career insight through airport mentoring scheme
London Stansted is marking the 11th year of its mentoring partnership with Forest Hall School, a scheme that teachers say is helping to transform students’ confidence and broaden their career ambitions.
The long-running programme pairs Year 11 pupils with airport staff from departments including engineering, the fire service, operations, construction and communications. Mentors will meet regularly with students between until April, offering guidance at a crucial time as they prepare for their GCSEs.
Callie Dennis, Careers Lead at Forest Hall School, said the initiative has become a vital part of the school’s careers support.
“The mentoring programme has continued to evolve, offering our students opportunities that really bring the world of work to life. By matching pupils with experienced professionals, we’re able to give them tailored guidance that sparks new interests and supports their ambitions. For many, the experience has been truly transformative.”
Assistant Headteacher Kayleigh Trainor said the partnership had gone from strength to strength, helping pupils better understand the different routes into employment.
“Speaking with mentors has helped students build confidence when talking to adults and opened their minds to the many pathways their careers could take. It’s been an invaluable experience for so many of our learners.”
Jennie Crossling, Senior Education and Employment Manager at the airport, the initiative is an important part of the airport’s commitment to supporting its local communities.

By pairing Year 11 students with colleagues from across the airport, we help them build confidence, develop essential skills and explore future careers. This initiative not only supports young people through their GCSEs but also reflects our ambition to inspire the next generation and contribute to a more inclusive and sustainable future for aviation.”
Nine airport staff are taking part in this year’s programme, continuing the partnership’s long tradition of helping local young people prepare for life beyond school.
