London Stansted celebrates World Book Day with launch of creative challenge for children

London Stansted Airport’s education centre has today launched a competition for local schools on World Book Day, which will see winning stories, poems and drawings published in a special book distributed at the airport.

The Aerozone, a purpose-built facility for school groups to learn more about the airport and aviation, is sending entry details for the writing and illustration competition directly to all primary and secondary schools within 10 miles of the airport.

Winning stories, poems and drawings will be turned into a free book that will be handed out to some of the millions of children and young people travelling through the airport during the summer.

Primary and Secondary children can enter one of three categories: Short story (up to 500 words), poem (up to 200 words), or an illustration (A4-sized). Submissions should be on the themes of airports and aircraft, flight, travel, going abroad or working at an airport.

Each winning student will receive:

  • A special prize for the individual
  • A full behind-the-scenes tour of London Stansted Airport
  • A box of books for their school class kindly donated by WH Smith
  • A visit to the Aerozone, with friends and family

An invitation to a VIP Book launch event at the airport to hand out the first copies of the winners’ book

We want to encourage local students to let their imaginations run wild and share their best creative efforts with us and our young passengers. The competition allows us to further engage with the schools in our community and offers a unique chance for students to share their work with the millions of passengers who will travel from London Stansted on their summer holidays this year.
Marcella M'Rabety, London Stansted's CSR Manager

The Aerozone has welcomed more than 12,000 children since it opened, and offers a glimpse into how the airport works with talks from professions including security, pilots, engineers, fire fighters and cabin crew, STEM activities and access to a special viewing platform right by the runway.

Details of the competition can be requested by emailing stn_communityrelations@stanstedairport.com, with the submission deadline on 8 April. Winners will be announced on 6th May.
