Stansted’s got talent - airport on the search for new apprentices

London Stansted’s community team has been out and about in Essex showcasing the latest airport apprenticeship opportunities to budding scientists and engineers.

The team dropped in on the Big Bang Fair at the Chelmsford campus of Anglia Ruskin University last week where students from nearly 70 schools from across the East of England were able to see the current roles on offer.

Stansted’s on the lookout for five new engineering apprentices to join the airport’s specialist team who do everything from changing the runway lights to maintaining the driverless train system which connects the terminal to the boarding gates.

"Our apprenticeships offer young, talented individuals the chance to begin their career on a structured and supported programme as an alternative to going to university. We have an excellent track record in recruiting apprentices, particularly within our engineering and customer service teams.

“Last year, we recruited and trained 22 apprentices, with most ending up in full time positions. These programmes help us to build our pool of talented youngsters and allows our experienced colleagues to pass on their invaluable knowledge to their future successors.

“Stansted Airport is already the biggest single employment site in the East of England and home to 12,000 workers. With passenger numbers set to top 25 million passengers this summer, new airlines like Jet2 arriving and ambitious plans for a new £130 million arrivals building recently unveiled, we are looking to increase the number of customer service and engineering apprentices we recruit to serve our growing airport.”
Joanne Davies, London Stansted’s Education Coordinator

The airport aims to recruit more local people by boosting skills in aviation across the region, and has recently announced proposals together with Harlow College for a new £12m Aviation College at the airport, designed to train the next generation of engineers.
