Students explore airport careers at Women in Science event

A group of young women got a hands-on look at careers in aviation this week, meeting female engineers and airport staff at a special event celebrating the United Nations International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

Thirty students from Year 8 at Forest Hall School in Stansted Mountfitchet, took part in the event, held at the Aerozone on Tuesday (Feb 11), London Stansted’s dedicated education centre.

The event was all about opening doors and giving young women the confidence to explore careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), with inspiring role models sharing their journeys and advice.

Students had the chance to chat with a variety of female professionals, including Kathy Morrissey the airport’s Planning & Insights Director, Shannon Barber, Engineering Technician and Stacey Cole, Performance Analyst.

Alex Smith, London Stansted’s Education Manager, said:

“It was brilliant to see so many young women engaged and asking questions with professionals from across the airport. This event is all about breaking down barriers and showing students that STEM careers are fun, rewarding, and open to everyone.”

The students found the experience enjoyable too. Year 8 student Poppy said:

"I never really thought about working in the airport before, but after today, I can totally see myself at an airport. Learning about all the different jobs showed me they’re not just for men, which was really inspiring. It’s made me want to explore more STEM subjects at school!"

Amelia, a Year 8 student, added:

"I really enjoyed the day. It was really fun learning about all the different jobs at the airport, and it’s made me think about new careers I never knew about before."

London Stansted is committed to shaping the next generation of aviation professionals through three key education and skills initiatives. 

Together, these initiatives offer valuable opportunities for young people to gain the skills, knowledge, and experience they need for a successful career in aviation, helping build a skilled workforce for the future.

  • Aerozone Education Centre offers children between 4 and 18 the chance to explore aviation and transport through fun, hands-on workshops. Located on the airport, Aerozone sparks interest in STEM subjects while introducing students to the wide range of career opportunities in aviation.
  • Stansted Airport Employment and Skills Academy, managed by London Stansted and delivered in partnership with Harlow College, serves as a one-stop shop for job seekers. It provides a tailored aviation training programme, equipping local people with the skills they need to secure employment with one of the 200+ employers based at the airport.
  • Stansted Airport College, in partnership with Harlow College, is the only UK college based directly on an airport campus. Offering specialised courses in aviation the college helps students gain industry-relevant qualifications and hands-on experience, preparing them for careers in the aviation sector.
